Mahogany Chairs

Chairs inspired by award winning furniture maker Sam Maloof.  His works are in major museums and his rocking chairs are in the homes of Ronald Reagan and Jimmy Carter. I have made six of these chairs and the baby cradle is my own design which when placed next to a chair it will be rocked by the motion of the rocker.  These three pieces are African mahogony.  Each piece is hand cut and hand fitted with high grade epoxy joints that require no screws. When the chair is assembled it is shaped by hand. The finish is aquired by a three step process. First Boiled Linseed oil is applied and allowed to laquer. The laquer is removed by sanding, leaving the oily underlayer and hand rubbed. This is then French polished with light oil and hand rubbed. The third step is a mixture of two oils and beeswax. The final rub and polish brings a protective low luster that ages well.
